Toner vs. Ink Cartridges: What's the Difference?

Understand liquid ink, powder toner, laser and inkjet printing, drum units, yield and choosing the right supply for your printer.

Inkjet and laser printers use different supplies
Inkjet printers typically apply tiny droplets of liquid ink to paper. Laser and LED printers typically transfer powdered toner to a drum image and fuse it to the sheet. These supplies are fundamentally different and are not interchangeable. Your printer's exact model determines what it accepts.
Inside an inkjet cartridge
Inkjet printers may use individual cyan, magenta, yellow and black cartridges, a combined colour cartridge, or an ink tank system. Some printhead components are built into the cartridge; others remain in the printer. Identical-looking cartridges can have different codes, chip configurations or supported printer models.
Inside a toner system
Laser printers generally use a toner cartridge and an imaging drum, though some combine them. A separate drum unit is not the same as a toner cartridge. If the display requests a drum replacement, confirm that you are not ordering toner instead. Follow the printer manufacturer's normal replacement process.
Which technology makes sense?
For some photo and colour applications, an inkjet provides an attractive option. Toner-based printers may be efficient for high-volume office text. Consider overall cost per page, acquisition cost, expected usage, document type, maintenance and available consumables rather than assuming one technology always wins.
What page yield means
A cartridge's advertised page yield is an estimate obtained under specified conditions and coverage. Printing photographs, large dark graphics or very dense pages changes consumption. Standard- and high-yield products should be compared using the same basis and the printer's actual needs.
Find your printer's exact replacement
Read the device model and existing supply reference before you shop. A Brother TN-660 black toner cartridge is a laser-printing product for particular models. An HP 564XL photo black ink cartridge is an inkjet supply with a different purpose.
